AKISI FOTO LITERACY
Reflect | Reimagine | Create
ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
The word "Akisi" comes from Swahili, meaning to reflect. True to its name, this residency is envisioned as a moment of pause a space to take a breath, chill, and engage in meaningful exchange.
Akisi is a growing photo literacy initiative dedicated to empowering local Tanzanian photographers through immersive learning, critical dialogue, and practical exposure that aligns with global standards of photographic practice. Rooted in the belief that photography is both a tool of expression and a medium of empowerment, Akisi creates space for photographers to reflect on their work, reimagine their role as visual storytellers, and reconnect with their craft and community.
OUR APPROACH
Launched with the Akisi Residency in the coastal village of Mfumbwi, Jambiani on Zanzibar’s east coast, the program began as a week-long creative retreat centered on sustainable approaches to photography. Under the mentorship of internationally renowned photographer María Primo (Spain) and Simon Luyenga (Tanzania), emerging photographers engaged in in-depth explorations of ecology, identity, and process — culminating in a pop-up exhibition using digital and cyanotype techniques.
This foundational experience set the tone for Akisi's unique model: a space where artistic exploration meets applied learning, and traditional wisdom merges with contemporary practices.
